Hola padres,
These past two weeks class was great. The students learned how to ask questions, and they learned about body parts and clothing. This week the students created a small wardrobe that helped them learn the different types of clothing. Although they were not able to finish they still enjoyed making them. I noticed the students enjoying coloring and drawing, which took them longer than what I expected, but still had fun. Therefore, they were able to take their wardrobe project home to finish.
Overall the class has been going well and I am looking forward on providing you all with more drawings and colorings from the kids.
Warm regards,
Irene Sanchez

Patwin Elementary Intermediate Spanish
Hola padres,
These past two weeks students have been learning about the articles to be able to form sentences. Students really enjoyed learning about the articles because it made it easier for them to refer to/describe things in Spanish and complete their own sentences. We participated in different activities for them to practice the articles such as: el, la, los, las, un, unas, and unos. These activities allowed students to practice saying and using the articles. I gave them the opportunity to come up with their own sentences and this is what they came up with. We also played an activity where I wrote the different articles on one side of a sticky note and on the other side they had to write a sentence using that specific article. Students really enjoyed this activity because there was some competition for prizes and they were able to demonstrate what they had learned!
Thank you for taking the time to read and happy holidays,
Maestra Jessica(:

Patwin Beginning ASL Week 11
Hello all! This week in the Patwin Beginning ASL class, we are learning everyday useful signs. Today, we focused on signs you’d use in a restaurant, for example: “I want order....” The kids came up with a story about Bob, who went to a restaurant and ate a lot of food! And here are pictures of a couple of brave students who went up and signed the whole story on their own! One is in the middle of signing hamburger, while the other is signing lemonade.
Thank you for checking in! :)

North Davis Elementary Intermediate Spanish
Hola Padres,
I am Jocelyne the Spanish Intermediate teacher at North Davis Elementary. These past weeks we have covered a lot : from opposites, feelings, numbers, fruits, vegetables and so much more! We have been keeping a notebook where the students practice how to write different sentences with each new or old topic. However, they sometimes do prefer to write on the white boards.
The following pictures are just a glimpse of what we have been doing and hope to do more.

Birch Lane Beginning Spanish
Hola Padres!
My name is Sandra Moreno, maestra of the Spanish beginning class at Birch Lane Elementary School. Teaching my class has been great from the beginning. So far we have worked on multiple writing activities, art activities, as well as played interactive games that have facilitated the learning process.
During this past week we the students learned how to say different phrases such as "I like", "I don't like", " I have", "I don't have", "I want", and "I don't want". To learn these phrases we connected phrases to words we learned the previous week as well as to words we relate to our lives. The activities mostly consisted of writing on white boards and
white paper. Here are some examples:

Hola padres,
This past week the students have been learning some descriptive words and emotions. The students enjoyed learning about emotions because they were able to draw pictures and create their own emojis. Having the students make their own emojis helped them understand and distinguish between emotions. They also were able to express their emotions by drawing how they felt that morning. Below are some examples of what students did in class this past week (Nov 27 - Nov 30). We all enjoyed drawing and learning as a group.
In addition, class has been going very well!

Patwin Elementary Intermediate Spanish
Hola padres,
Our students have learned so much this past month. One of the key ways they have learned is by writing in their notebooks as a way to practice writing in Spanish and getting familiar with writing sentences. It has been really exciting for me to see how much they have learned and continue to practice speaking Spanish in class. We have learned different subjects such as the seasons, vegetables(verduras), fruits, and they're favorite platter. Another exciting thing we have started is reading books together! The first book we read was "Buenas Noches Luna" which translate to "Goodnight Moon". Many of the students were familiar with the book and were really happy to read the Spanish version. They are great students, and I am really excited to see their progress by the end of the year! Thank you for reading.
Sincerely, Maestra Jessica(:

Intermediate Spanish Birch Lane
Hola padres,
My name is Irene Sanchez I am the intermediate Spanish teacher at Birch Lane.
Just wanted to say that class has been great since the beginning, and we all have been enjoying class. The students have been working very hard and currently working on learning opposites. These past few weeks have been more fun with the students since they have had a few projects to work on. One of the projects consisted of making clocks (as you can see below), the students made clocks while learning time in Spanish.
I will be planning more projects for the students in the coming future. They are such a joy, and I am happy we all are having fun in class.
Sorry for not writing a blog sooner, but I will keep you updated more often.

Teacher Desmona |
Hello all!
My name is Teacher Desmona and I teach American Sign Language (ASL) at our St. James site. This is my fourth year returning and coming to TALK everyday is my favourite part of the morning! I’m so happy to see new and returning faces this year! I'm looking forward to enjoying ASL along with your kids and families! I think we’re having fun so far :)
Activity Folders, Manual Alphabet |
The first few weeks we will cover basic greetings, introductions, and personal identity. Giving and receiving this kind of information is very important in Deaf Culture. We will also practice the manual alphabet, numbers, and useful commands and sentences in the classroom.
We have played with beach balls and bingo boards to keep ASL fun while learning! We’ve created folders to keep any artwork or activities done in class. We’ve also decorated our ticket bags, where the kids store their tickets they earn to “purchase” prizes on Fridays. It is very important for the students to arrive to class on time each day and come prepared to play and learn in an ASL environment. I want them to get the benefits of the full class time so they don’t miss out of any of the fun. Plus, they will have the opportunity to earn more tickets. :)
Hello, Good morning
How you? (and common responses- good, tired, fine, etc.)
Nice to-meet you, Goodbye
You name what? My name (fingerspell name).
You boy, girl which? Me boy. -or- Me girl.
You boy, girl which? Me boy. -or- Me girl.
how-Old you? Me (age). (number is placed by chin and brought down like sign for old)
You live where? I live Davis. -or- I live Winters. (city names are fingerspelled first then signed)
This week we started our “Letter of the Week” where we practice an assigned letter. We will practice signs that start with the letter, practice fingerspelled words that start with the letter, and practice signs that use the letter handshape. Some of the kids have already added a couple additions to this week’s list. :)
Letter of the Week: Aa

Intermediate Spanish - Patwin
Hello parents,
For the past two weeks I have been getting familiar with the students and figuring out what kind of activities they enjoy the most. All of the students are so bright and intelligent, many of the students that have continued in intermediate Spanish are able to understand and translate phrases in Spanish when I give them instructions. For the first week I had them tell me about their favorite color or animal by writing and drawing on their white boards. For the second week of class we played a guess game called "Adivina, Adivinor" which is how students learned how to say English words in Spanish. They were also able to design their own paper bags to put their tickets in for the end of the month raffle. We did a lot of writing on white boards but starting next week they will be writing in journals so that they can keep a record of their writing and see much they have learned at the end of the year.
I did not take pictures these past weeks but there's going to be plenty for the next blog!
Thank you for reading,
Maestra Jessica.

Intermediate Spanish Class - Pioneer
Hola padres,
These past 2 weeks we have covered a lot: from greetings to ABC’s, to numbers, and other review topics (days of the week, months of the year etc). We have also been keeping a journal where the students practice how to write the date: in past, present and future tense. Later in the year, we will be increasing our time writing and we will be formulating different sentence structures as we learn/review new topics. Lastly, I wanted to share that yesterday we had fruit (strawberries and blueberries) to celebrate past birthdays. We will be doing this at the end of every month!
Here are some phrases and pictures of what we have covered in class, please ask your kids to share with you and practice with them:

Wrapping up in Intermediate ASL Class - St. James
During our last month the students created board games that they imagined on their own. Here, they are pictured teaching others how to play their games which included a "Candy Land" style one, one for strategic land domination, and one on American trivia.
Here the students enjoy our last week of TALK classes for the year. The students played dodgeball and cornhole in between practicing their ASL rendition of "How Far I'll Go" from Moana and, later, bowled during Parent Open House.
