It has been really rewarding to teach another language to my students. They all have been excellent children who are always willing to participate in class, and I really enjoyed having them in my class. I hope to see you all next year. Enjoy your vacations!!!
TALK is a parent-run non-profit dedicated to offering second-language classes for elementary school-aged kids in Davis, California. This blog is written by the teachers, to offer glimpses into the children's adventures in language learning.

Int ASL-St James
It was a great pleasure working with my students this year! They did fantastic at the end of the year performance showing off all their learning from the past few weeks such as classifiers, facial expression, grammar structure, translating from English to ASL.
In order to keep practicing the language, I highly suggest you to go to Deaf events, ASL events, find other peers to practice with, and watching videos/using those sites:
Handspeak.com
ASLPRO.com
FOR EVENTS: There is many social events all over Northern California. If you google, "ASL events", many events will come up.
Have a FABULOUS summer! Looking forward to work with the students again next year!

Hola padres de TALK ☀️
It was such an honor to have had the opportunity to work with your children this semester/school year and see them learn and grow curious about Spanish. With the summer being around the corner, I am hopeful that some students (if not all) would like to continue their studies (after all, in order to learn a language, one must practice it daily!). Thus, here are some resources I think can be useful and age appropriate for your kids so they can continue to practice and engage with Spanish during the summer:
Rockalingua
- Description: Kid friendly website to practice Spanish! Has a variety of free resources from songs, videos, worksheets, picture dictionaries, and more! You can also pay a monthly fee to access all their resources available.
- Link: https://rockalingua.com/
Duolingo
- Description: Free website and phone app that aid with language learning. Duolingo uses a play-based approach to make learning fun but also focuses on grammar (reading and writing) and pronunciation.
- Link: https://www.duolingo.com/
- Description: “This is a phone app that uses engaging games to make language learning a fun part of a daily routine. While fun and simple, the beautifully designed app is built with years of research into how to help ... learn a language more effectively and easily.”
- Link: This is a phone app!
If you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at teguerrero@ucdavis.edu. Wishing you and your family a great and fun summer! 😀
Warmly,

Beginner French - DAC - May Post!
Bonjour TALK Parents,
Merci!! The TALK school year has come to an end and I just wanted to say thanks to you and your amazing children! It was a pleasure teaching the Beginner French class and I hope that the students had as much fun as I did. Thank you to the families that came to Open House this morning and joined the students in playing games, it was a lot of fun! I wanted to make one last post to say thank you and to summarize what we did this past month!
At the beginning of this month we learned about feelings and emotions, the students each created their own emojis to show a feeling:
After that, we began preparing for our End of the Year Performance where the students made crêpes. All of the students worked so hard and I could tell that they were dedicating time outside of class to memorize their lines, I was super impressed! It was a fun two weeks practicing and preparing all of our props, and then it was finally performance day and the students did such a fantastic job!

Int. Spanish at NDE
¡Hola a todo el mundo!
Over the past month in the Intermediate Spanish class at North Davis Elementary, we have been learning verbs and vocabulary and preparing for the big day - our presentations at Davis Arts Center.
For the presentation, each student picked one or two of the Mexican states and wrote a report on it. This was actually an idea that one of our students had, and it turned out to be a great one!
I have enjoyed teaching all of the students in this class (Maisie, Abby, Toby, Cyrus, Devansh, Willa and Hannah) but sorry to not be able to continue in the fall, when my regular teaching schedule will change.
I hope that every one of these students continues learning a second or third language. Ask me about the cognitive benefits of being multilingual the next time you see me!
Abrazos,
Maestro Avi

Beg/Int ASL at Patwin - Mid May!
Hello Patwin ASL Families!
Warm Wishes,
Teacher Kiara 🌸
These last two weeks of May, we have been reviewing signs, practicing receptive skills, and practicing facial expressions. We have also been preparing for the game we will be playing at the End of the Year Performance this coming Saturday, May 18th!
One important part of ASL is facial expressions! When asking questions, the placement of your eyebrows helps the person you are signing with properly understand the question you are asking. A yes/no question requires raised eyebrows. A "wh" question requires a furrowed brow. The diagram below if a fun way to help your students remember the proper facial expression when asking a question!
Be sure to have your students demonstrate the different facial expressions used when asking questions!
As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns via email at klcuevas@ucdavis.edu. I look forward to seeing you all at the End of the Year Performance!

Intermediate French - Prep for Student Showcase!
Bonjour Parents,
For the next few weeks at TALK we will be rehearsing our performance for the student showcase. We’ve chosen to do a cooking show and teach the audience how to make crepes!
Here is the recipe for the students to practice at home. I recommend that the students write down their lines on a note card and review them at least once a day. It’s also helpful to write down how to pronounce each word.
Bonne chance !

Int Spa - Korematsu - Late April Post
Hola padres de TALK ☀️
These past two weeks, the kids have gone over vocabulary related to places in the city as well as means of transportation. We have been focusing on verbs related to these topics such as to travel (viajar), to go, (ir), and to work (trabajar).
During the week dedicated to places in the city the kids got to draw and label their ideal city, adding their six favorite places onto their maps. Here is a fun link for you to review this vocabulary at home. The website includes online games, songs and even worksheets the kids can work on on their own: https://rockalingua.com/worksheets/la-ciudad-worksheet
