Beg/Int ASL at Patwin - Late March

Hello Patwin ASL Parents!

The week before Spring Break, we went over house related signs as seen below. Each student drew their own house or a dream house, and then presented it to the class using the house signs we learned. Be sure to ask your students to teach you the signs for the different rooms in your home!

House Signs:
HOUSE, KITCHEN, DINING ROOM, LIVING ROOM, FAMILY ROOM, PLAY ROOM, BATHROOM, BEDROOM, LAUNDRY ROOM, CLOSET, OFFICE, GARAGE, ATTIC, BASEMENT.

Here are pictures of everyone's houses:

Mason's Home!

Tamara's Dream Home!

Anik's Sea Basement!

On Tuesday, we said good bye to Teacher Tara, and thanked her for all she has done for TALK! We will definitely miss her, and we wish her a safe move with her family.

We ended the week watching a signed version of the story The Tortoise and the Hare to practice our receptive and comprehension skills. If time allows, I encourage you to watch the video with your student and have them explain what's happening throughout the story. You can find it by following this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OOMkmu5R5s

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns via email at klcuevas@ucdavis.edu. I am excited to be working with your students, and look forward to seeing them after Spring Break!

Warm Wishes,
Teacher Kiara 🌸

Hola padres de TALK ☀️

The week before Spring Break, the kids went over different vocabulary related to spring! We reviewed words like rain, rainbows, butterflies, lady bugs, and more! We also went over the verb conjugation of the verb to be, which in Spanish we have two: ser and estar. The kids and I went over when to use which and worked on sentence building describing stuff related to spring.

Due to the Book Fair, we held class outside the majority of the week, and although it was a bit cold we managed to have fun! We played a variety of games, such as play the kids' favorite game "Steal the Bacon," build spring related vocabulary out of play-doh and played matching pairs too!

Here are a few pictures from that week:

The kids worked on verb conjugations and spring-related vocabulary

The kids played find the matching pair with images and written vocabulary

The kids and I wish you all a Happy Spring Break!

With the break coming to an end, I also wanted to invite you to help me give a warm welcome to Maestra Evelyn, who will be teaching Mondays/Wednesdays due to my class-scheduling conflict.

As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns do not hesitate to reach out to me via email at teguerrero@ucdavis.edu

Warmly,

Maestra Teresa 🌻

Beginner French Feb/March post

Bonjour TALK parents!

Our small class has been having a great time the past month! We learned fun topics such as
  • la nourriture- food
  • les vêtements- clothes
  • les fournitures scolaires- school supplies
Our class has been working really hard and I can tell how much our students are learning! Each week they get better and better at retaining previous vocabulary and being able to add it to new words. I am really pleased with everyone's progress.

For example, when we learned clothing, we practiced describing outfits with not only the new clothes vocab but also using color vocabulry learned a long time ago:
i.e.: "elle porte une robe rose"- she is wearing a pink dress

We also reviewed numbers! The class practiced using numbers in different contexts. We practiced asking and telling our age:
     - "Quel âge as-tu?"- How old are you?
     - "J'ai (number) ans"- I am (number) years old.

as well as asking and telling what the date is:
     - "Quelle est la date?"
     - "Aujourd'hui, c'est vendredi, le 15 mars"

When learning clothing vocabulary, students got to make their own "Catalogue de Mode"- Fashion Catalaog! They drew their own outfits and labelled and priced them in French.

Hola padres de TALK ☀️

These past two weeks the kids and I have been reviewing  parts of the house and appliances/furniture such as bedroom, kitchen, living room, couch, fridge, bed, etc. The kids reviewed a few verbs, such as to have (tener) and to be (estar). We also reviewed some new animals the kids hadn't seen before such as deer, raccoon, shrimp, squid, frog, owl, insect and others. We focused on three main areas: jungle, forest and the ocean. The kids also reviewed the verb to live (vivir) and worked on sentence building.

We did a variety of activities such as building a house together. Each kid picked a room in the house which they drew and labeled. We also got to build animals with play-doh and tried to guess what we each had made.

Here are some pictures from this week:

The student drew a bathroom and labeled it

The student in the front drew a kitchen and the one in the back a dining room

The students went over three different types of animals this week and worked on sentence building

The kids played with play-doh and built many animals reviewed this week

Int ASL - St James - Mid March

Hello all!

The students have been learning about verbs used in ASL grammar such as "don't like, don't want, like, want, don't know, know", etc. and also learned the difference between verbs and nouns. "Sit and Chair" looks similar in signing but has different movement and facial expression.

They also learned 5 parameters of ASL:
1) Handshape
2) Palm Orientation
3)Movement
4) Location
5) Facial Expression

For example: "Mom and Dad" what parameters do they have in common? Handshape, Palm Orientation, Movement, and Facial Expression. "Mad and Sad"  Only has Palm Orientation in common.

It has been fun teaching them more about grammar!

Birch Lane - Intermediate Spanish

Hola padres,

I hope you all are doing fine. The students have been doing really well in class. This past month we have been working hard with new topics such as animals, community places, professions and school subjects. I have seen so much progress with the students especially in their writing. The students have been working on writing more phrases or sentences these past few weeks as well. Below are some stuff that the kids have been working on. I hope you enjoy and like always, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me.

Best,
Irene

The students were working on a small comic book. They got to choose the topic. Here is a small sample of what they wrote. I have to say all the students impressed me with their writing skills. There writing skills have been getting strong. Yay!

Also, the students made cootie catchers. I was not able to get a picture of all of them, but i can say they turned out great.
