Mid-November Post: Int Spa Birch Lane Elementary

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all doing great. Just a quick update, our class is doing great. The kids have begun to create new games incorporating the target language with me. Last week we created the game around the world in class, which was like a board game, with the kids moving up the places, and completing the task they got in order to move up. This game helped us incorporate everything we have learned so far such as clothing, countries, verbs, sentences, sports, etc., in the target language. Recently we went over verbs in Spanish such as nadar (to swim), colorear (to color), gritar (to scream), leer (to scream), destornudar (to sneeze), dar (to give), atar (to tie), preguntar (to ask), saludar (to greet), etc., and the students created their own flashcard with the verb of their choice as seen below. This week we are going over conjunctions, and so far we are doing good, I will soon post if we create art with the conjunctions. Make sure to practice the target language with your kids! Ask them to teach you as practice :)

Best,

Beginner Spanish - Korematsu - Mid November Post

¡ Hola padres y madres de TALK!

Welcome to the blog:

This past two weeks the kids learned food related vocabulary. Below is a list of the words that they studied, so if you wish you can review it with them at home.  Also, I have attached some pictures of the children  making posters to go over  some of the vocabulary that they have learned.

The children have been doing great, and they have retained a great deal of the vocabulary taught in class.

Next week, we will continue with the food theme, focusing on how to order food at a restaurant; to know how it goes, don't miss the next blog!

¡ Hasta la próxima! 🤗

Intermediate ASL - St James

Hi everyone,
This month of November, we have been learning about foods and drinks in anticipation of Thanksgiving coming up! Since the students already know most foods and drinks, we learned technical words such as measuring, cup, teaspoon, tablespoon, cook, mix, bake then sign, "1 tsp of sugar", "4 cups of meat", etc.

Have your child sign to you while you're cooking to test their knowledge!

Mid-November Beginner French Update

Bonjour les parents, it's Enseignante Cate!

Over the past few weeks, we've learned how to conjugate the verb être, "to be", in French and reviewed most of our old vocabulary.

Ask your student to sing "Je suis, tu es, il est, elle est" to you, name the rainbow in French, or teach you how to play Simon Dit, "Simon Says".

We also played an obstacle course game with Intermediate French this week to introduce position words!

Next week, we'll learn Thanksgiving foods and more position words for a scavenger hunt game.

À la prochaine!

It was a bunch of fun!

Beg./Int. ASL- Patwin- Mid November Post

Hello Patwin ASL Parents!
In the past couple of weeks we have learned various fruit and vegetable signs. Some signs we covered were apple, orange, banana, grapes, strawberry, cherry, tomato, carrot, corn, lettuce, onion. We created a fruit and vegetable bowl using construction paper. The students were able to describe the fruits they incorporated on their bowls. I attached pictures of student marvelous work bellow.

We have also spent a week reviewing all of the signs we have leaned thus far. We reviewed personal identity signs like deaf, hard of hearing, hearing, I am ___ years old and my name is ___. We also reviewed our shapes like circle, triangle, square, rectangle, and star. Finally we reviewed our colors, these included red, yellow, green, blue, purple, green and rainbow. The review was meant to enforce the repetition of signs and is a way to  increase retention of the signs.

In the upcoming weeks, we will be starting meals and beverages. We will be introducing signs such as drink, eat, food, hungry, snack, desert.

I appreciate your support and would like to keep encouraging students to use their ASL outside of the classroom.  As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions, suggestions, comments or concerns. My email is gortizf@ucdavis.edu.

Respectfully,

Grecia Ortiz Flores

Int Spa- Birch Lane- End of October Post

End of October Post
I hope you all had a wonderful month of October, Halloween 🎃 👻 , and Día de Los Muertos! This past month we have gone over sports such as futbol (soccer), baloncesto (basketball), voleibol (volleyball), beisbol (baseball), tenis (tennis), golf (golf), softbol (softball), and gimnasia (gymnastics). With these words, we learned how to put them in a sentence "Me gusta jugar (sport in Spanish)." (I like to play (sport).) For this past week, we went over the meaning of El Día de Los Muertos, which is a tradition celebrated in Latin America. For this tradition, we remember those who have passed on and we put up an altar decorated with things such as; food, flowers (specifically the Marigold flower), skulls, candy, water, candles, etc,. In addition to learning the tradition we learned a few vocabulary words regarding the tradition such as; el candelero (candles), las calacas (skeletons), la calavera (skulls), el cemazúchil (marigold), el altar (the altar), and las ofrendas (offerings). We also learned how to say the sentence "Lo que me gusta mas de el Dia de Los Muertos es (vocabulary word)." (What I like most about el Día de Los Muertos is (vocabulary word).)Therefore, from this tradition and from what we learned we created our own drawn altar with the art that every student made. Below are a few pictures of our art and work. If you want to learn more about this tradition, a few movies I recommend you all watch with your children are Coco (2017) and The Book of Life (2014). I also encourage you all to practice the language at home with your children to have them better understand. Thank you all for your time! Feliz Noviembre!

Best,

Beginner Spanish - Korematsu - End of October Post

¡ Hola padres y madres de TALK!

Welcome to the blog:

Last week, the students learned the colors in Spanish, and made Popsicles of different colors to reinforce the vocabulary. They really enjoyed this activity as you can see in the pictures below:

Then, since this week was "review week",  we reviewed all the vocabulary learned until last week, that is : the alphabet, numbers (1-30), fruits, vegetables and colors.

To reinforce all the vocabulary the children  played games like bingo, memory, and drew their favorite fruits (from the ones they learned in class).

Next week, the kids will be learning  different kinds of food, doing some interesting activities and playing fun games, so don't  miss the next blog to see more pictures!

¡ Hasta la próxima! 🤗
