St. James ASL Class

Hello Hello Hello!

The last couple of weeks in the Fall Session were a lot of fun and the kiddos had a really great time creating menus and boardgames. On the week that we created the menus, the students went around the classroom visiting the pretend restaurants they had all made. This activity created an opportunity to introduce and practice lots of vocabulary. Each student made their own menu. They came up with names for their restaurant, food items and their prices, and even hours of operation. The students really enjoyed adding whatever food and drink items they wanted to their menu. I think letting them choose what they wanted on their menus gave them a chance to practice ASL in such a fun way that it didn’t seem like learning. The class as a whole loved this activity. We will be visiting our deaf friendly restaurants again in the new session because the students had so much fun with it. :)
Before we got to our menu activity, each day the class signed along to a book full of playtime signs. This prepared them for the following week in which we made the boardgames. The students got to make up their own board game. Some worked in partners and some created their own. It was a delight to see all the creativity. When we got the chance to play the finished product, the students were able to practice the playtime signs they learned the week before. The signs became very useful while playing the students’ board games. Again, they didn’t seem to notice or mind they were learning and practicing ASL because it was so much fun.
I had so much fun in the Fall Session, and I’m looking forward to more fun this Winter/Spring Session. :)

Please enjoy the pictures below. Thanks for stopping by!
