Int Spa - Korematsu - Late Nov Post

Hello TALK Parents!

This week the kids have done some review on a topic they know well: the calendar. We have reviewed the days of the week (as well as yesterday, today, and tomorrow), the months of the year as well as the seasons. The kids have also been working on making associations with the months and the seasons (e.g. Winter starts mid December and ends mid March).

Another thing the kids have also reviewed this past week is how to say when their birthday is in Spanish as well as their birthday season. Speaking of birthdays, we have two birthdays coming up these next two weeks so the kids will be reviewing the birthday song in Spanish to sing to their classmates 🎉🎂

Here is a link to review the days of the week at home. If you would like to challenge your kids in a fun way, ask them to sing along and keep up the pace (the song speeds up!):

The kids collaborated to order the days of the week

The kids also had to try to order the months without prior review

This week the kids worked on a calendar. Next week we will finish it by adding new vocabulary to it: the weather

Int. ASL- St James

Hope y’all had a great Thanksgiving break! I’m so thankful that the rain washed away the terrible smoke and clear the air.

After a long break, the students eased back into routine and played Apple to Apple game. Apparently they have never played Apple to Apple game before so they really liked it! It was to help strengthen their use of facial expressions with the green adjective cards and to teach them new signs from the red cards. We also used the red cards to practice constructing a proper ASL sentence, for example: Lobster, Apple pie, Skateboarding, etc.
“Lobster I eat”
“Apple pie my mom made”
“He skateboard fast!”

We also learned about Gallaudet University.
How many Deaf universities are there? 1. Gallaudet is the only one Deaf university.
Where is it? Washington D.C.
Can anyone go there? Yes… however, the environment is mainly signing so you would want to be fluent in ASL when you go there.
Do you want to go there someday? No (they want to go to UC Davis)

Enjoy the rain!

Hello!

I hope your Break was good.  It was good to see my students again.

This week, we worked on $1, $5, $10, .5cents, etc., and how to sign numbers in hundreds such as 100, 200, 300, and so on.

Two students were pretending to be a cashier and selling the pizza.  They did well!
(Sorry, my device wouldn't allow me to transfer pictures to here - this blog.)

They also learned how to sign in ASL from written English.  They seemed they understood.

English: She drives a car.
ASL: Car she drives.

English: I eat.
ASL: (I) me eat.

English: I have three cats.
ASL: three cats I have.

Have a nice weekend!

St James Beg ASL Week 9

Hello TALK Parents!

Hope everyone is safe from the smoky air! The conditions outside meant we didn’t have our TALK ASL class this past Friday. However, prior to our break, the kids and I had a very fun week! We learned some basic food signs this week and did some fun activities!

Below you’ll see pictures of the day the kids made farm animals out of Play Doh (see if you can guess which animals they are!). You’ll also see pictures of the day we colored milkshakes, since our theme for the day was dairy signs!

This class is so artistic, it was so fun to see their creativity!

Stay safe, and have a happy thanksgiving!

Int Spanish - Birch Lane - Mid Nov

Hola padres,

I hope you all are doing well. These past weeks the students have been work hard especially since I have added more sentence writing verb conjugations. For week 8 we went over the days of the week. months and seasons. They did well with the this topic and should be able to tell you the months especially the days. Below is the activity from this past Thursday (week 9), and the goal was for the students to use the verb "comer" which is "to eat". They wrote what they like to eat during the upcoming celebrations. We learned about Thanksgiving terms and the students shared what they ate during that time that was not as traditional. As you can see the students did a great job, and they did a marvelous job with their drawings. We had a great time during Thursday's class.

I think I can say we were all getting hungry during class. Hope that you enjoy this upcoming holiday and vacation. Please stay safe!

Best,
Irene

Beg. and Int. ASL at Patwin

Hello!

I hope you are having a good week.  Students and I talked briefly about the smoky for a few days!  We are thinking about others who lost their homes.

Two weeks have been so quickly because there were no classes on Nov. 5th and 12th!  So far, basically, we learned how to sign in ASL from written English.

For Example:

English:  Are you feeling sick?
ASL: You feel sick?

English: I love my dogs!
ASL: dogs I/me love!

For more information:

https://www.dummies.com/languages/american-sign-language/how-to-structure-sentences-in-american-sign-language/

We will continue to work on that after Thanksgiving Break.

We also worked on numbers.  They already know how to sign from 0 to 10, but signing from 11 to 20 weren't easy to sign.   You can get an idea.   Take a look:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFCXyB6q2nU

Please ask your children to practice numbers with you.  You can play 4 corners with her/him.  It's just a fun and simple game.

Have a great break!

St James - Int ASL

This week we've been learning Veterans Day vocabulary and Thanksgiving vocabulary. The students learned how to sign honor, respect, memorial, military, army, marines, navy, freedom, America, turkey, pie, celebrate, family, Happy Thanksgiving, etc.

We also learned that one word has multiple ways to sign because the concept is different. For example:

"Mean"
You're being mean to me!
What does that means?
(One word, multiple meanings=different signs)

"Leave/Left"
Can you leave that on the table?
I'm leaving right now.
The leaves turned yellow.
He is a left-handed.
I drove the car to the left.
(1 word, multiple meanings=different signs)

Other examples that we have covered is "Run" and "Make".

The students have asked me to do more of those one word =multiple meanings=different signs so if you thought of an English word that has a multiple meanings, please let me know! I need more ideas from you all!

Int Spa - Korematsu - Mid November Post

Hola TALK Parents!

These past two weeks we have reviewed sports as well as the verbs hacer (to do) and jugar (to play). The kids remembered so many sports from previous years, it was so wonderful! They also learned that in Spanish certain sports go with either hacer or jugar but are not interchangeable. For example we say "Yo juego fútbol" (I play soccer) and we say "Yo hago gimnasia" (I do gymnastics) but can't switch the verbs around. They also made their own bingo cards using sports vocabulary and got the opportunity to share in class what do they do or play in regards to sports.

We also reviewed food and drinks related to Thanksgiving. The kids got the opportunity to practice their writing by reviewing the verb comer (to eat) and the verb beber (to drink). The kids shared in class what do they eat and drink during the Thanksgiving break as well as their favorite desserts!! We worked on a week long project called Un mural de culturas. For this mural, all the kids contributed something to our Thanksgiving table and wrote down a few things they are thankful for. For example:
  • Addison drew some warm beverages like hot chocolate and is thankful for her family
  • Ana drew some delicious ham and bread and is thankful for food, her home and her family
  • Ava drew a very creative turkey and is thankful for gymnastics
  • Isaac drew some fresh sushi and is thankful for his life
  • John drew some colorful donuts and is thankful for sports
  • And I drew some tamales and I'm thankful for being able to teach your kids Spanish!
Here are some photos from this week:

We reviewed the verbs hacer and jugar along with sports

The kids made their own bingo cards with sports vocab

Some kids finished early, so they finished coloring other worksheets they hadn't finished

¡Felices fiestas! (Happy holidays!)

Lastly, one of the kids turns 9 tomorrow! So we sang "Happy Birthday to You" in Spanish and we had some delicious donuts to celebrate his birthday!

I hope you are staying safely indoors. If you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to reach out to me via email at teguerrero@ucdavis.edu

Int. French - DAC - October 2018

Bonjour parents!

In the beginning of October, we covered Halloween vocab! However, these past few weeks at TALK we’ve been learning about numbers! We’ve been reviewing how to say numbers higher than 30. This week we played a game where I scattered pieces of colored paper with numbers on them around the room and when I called out numbers and colors of the papers the students had to stand on their numbers. For example, if I called out “Touchez le numéro cinquante-quatre (54) en rouge” (Touch the number fifty four in red) The students would stand on either the red paper with a 4 or a 5.

If you’d like to review numbers with your child I’ve posted some resources below!

Some challenging numbers to review:
·        13 treize
·        14 quatorze
·        15 quinze
·        16 seize

Review the differences between:
·        6 (six) and 16 (seize)
·        61 (soixante et  un ) and 71 (soixante onze)
·        81 (quatre-vingt-un) and 91 (quatre-vingt-onze)

Challenging numbers to pronounce:
10 – dix (the x is silent and becomes an “s” sound )
9 – neuf (nÅ“f)
6 – six
16 – seize
7 – sept (the “p” is silent, it sounds more like “cette”)

This website shows you how to pronounce numbers from 70-99

This is a good video to review pronunciations of numbers.

Here's a fun video on the Halloween vocab we learned!

Int. Spa - Pioneer - Día de Muertos

Hola padres de Pioneer!

Last week we learned fruits and vegetables and focused on the verb gustar, "me gustan las fresas" or "no me gusta la piña". The kids became familiar with this verb and its structure. This week we focus on Halloween and Día de Muertos vocabulary. We all had a great time. Here are some pictures :)

We also sang this song in class.

I am also pasting the link of movie trailer. If you'd like you can watch it with your kids this weekend. I think most of you have seen it but if you haven't I HIGHLY encourage you to watch Coco.

Please feel free to ask your children to share with you what they learned about El Día de los Muertos. ¡Gracias!

Int Spanish - Korematsu - Late Oct Post

Hello TALK parents!

These past two weeks we have reviewed fruit and vegetables as well as the verb to like (gustar) and how to say the time as well as the verb to be (ser). The kids had the opportunity to color in their own "me gusta/ no me gusta" books with images of fruits and vegetables and they did an activity to find out what their classmates like or didn't like using their books! We also worked on reviewing how to say the time by writing about our daily routines.

In regards to vocabulary, the kids also learned Halloween and Día de Muertos vocabulary and we did a few fun activities like: guess the monster (charades) and colored in an altar/ofrenda. Here is a video I played for them during class to review the time and Halloween vocabulary:

Lastly, we also reviewed Puerto Rico and México :) For next week, we will be talking about Chile as well as sports (requested by the students).

Here are some pictures from this week:

The kids worked on a worksheet to practice how to say the time in Spanish

The kids practice how to say the time by drawing their daily routines

Int Spanish - Birch Lane - Oct 31/Nov 1

Hola padres,

This week was a fun and creative week for the students. We had two events that were integrated into this weeks lesson plan, Halloween and Day of the Dead. Some of the activities for this week were related to Halloween and the Day of the dead. In addition to these events the students learned about the weather. They learned terms such as "storm, lightning, sunny, cold, freezing, hale, rain, tornado, snow".  All in all, it was busy and exciting week.

On Monday, the students started their Halloween themed Bingo Cards. This was so much fun since the students wanted to learn how to translate spooky terms in Spanish. We went over terms such as "vampire, black cat, skeleton, pumpkin, jack-or-latern, candy, trick-or-treat etc". As seen below their Bingo cards came out great. I am very proud of them.

In regards to the activity of Day of Dead, many students were not able to finish coloring some details and those pictures will be uploaded soon. However, I do have to say the students were excited to color their Day of Dead alter.
Thank you so much!
Irene Sanchez

Beg ASL-St James Week 6

Hello TALK Parents!

This week in class we had a review week where the students and I went over everything we’ve learned thus far. This includes the alphabet, colors, shapes, fruits, vegetables, and numbers! So as you can see, the kids learned a lot in such a short time, and they pick it up so well!

On Wednesday we took a break from our usual routine to cut out and decorate jack-o-lanterns in honor of Halloween! On the back of their jack-o-lanterns, the students wrote “For Halloween me what?” And filled in the blank with what they were dressing up as this year.

I hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween, and I’m very excited to teach the kids some new signs next week!
